Speculation by the media, fans, and paparazzi have all pointed to a possible prescription drug overdoes as the main cause of pop icon Michael Jackson's death. This many very well prove to be true, but what ultimately led him to that state of mind?

Friends of Jackson are now saying that Michael would have never been able to complete all 50 shows that promoters pushed on him.

“In the beginning he only agreed to five, but [the promoters] just kept adding more and more,” Walser, a family friend, said.

This isn't just speculation, it is fact. When Michael Jackson himself stood on a podium to announce his final curtain call he said it would be ten shows - that's it. But more and more shows started to pile on top of that due to the fan and media frenzy that followed. And finally it came down to 50 shows all of which sold out in the first few minutes, adding further to the pressure for Michael to perform in a big way.

“We thought this was it. He was in a very, very bad way and I was expecting to wake up any day and hear that he had died.

“His health gets far worse at concert time, it is 100 percent the pressure. I never believed he could have done all those shows.”

This isn't the first time Michael Jackson has succumb to the high-pressures of live performances. In 2001, prior to his “30th Anniversary” concert series in New York, Walsher said Jackson's family “feared for his life” and was forced to intervene with his prescription drug regimen.

Another source close to the Jackson camp said those around him had serious doubts that he was ever going to get on-stage at all. “Michael was not well at all, he couldn’t live up to his reputation and what others expected of him,” said the insider. “He was never going to perform.”

Others, such as Jon Kohan, former head of A&R Records and a good friend of Jackson, disagree. Kohan told Foxnews.com that Jackson was “so excited” for the scheduled upcoming tour.

"We spoke recently and he was in very high spirits. I wasn't aware of any heart problems, and he was in good health.

"He was so excited for the tour. It really would have been a comeback -- he was rehearsing and up to the task."

But was he really? Many people are looking for the doctor that was at Michael's side trying to resuscitate him while EMTs were en route. The police have towed the doctor's BMW from outside Jackson's home but nobody seems to know where the doctor is.

Jackson's family said that he received daily drug treatments similar to morphine via an injection. Could it be that Michael Jackson's doctor helped the singer finally rest in peace? After struggling for years with molestation accusations, legal problems, and a mountain of debt the further stress that was forced upon him by concert promoters could have been the straw that broke the camels back.

Jackson himself said he only wanted to do 5-10 shows, already stressful enough for a man who admitted to hating public places. Add 40 more shows to that - which they probably coerced him into by citing his mountain of debt - and the results would have been extremely high stress for Jackson plus the ever present fear of not being able to live up to the hype and expectations.

I think he may have asked his doctor for just a bit more of his pain relieving drugs than normal. People had already speculated for a long time that his mental state was always a little off. And for him, I think it came down to either canceling the shows and living with the worldwide fan disappointment or die before the shows began - and I don't think this was a man who would ever let down his beloved fans.

How did I get new of the death of Michael Jackson? Twitter. CNN started it with the cardiac arrest tweet, then TMZ confirmed his death with a tweet of their own. After that the Twitterverse went crazy! Some outlets are reporting that since the news broke Twitter updates are more than 7 minutes behind due to the huge outpouring of chatter, sadness, and mostly shock.
