Increase in Sri Lanka refugees

A photo just released by the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) shows just how many civilians are being affected by the battle between the Sri Lankan government and the Tamil Tigers.

The government of Sri Lanka has set up a no-fire zone (NFZ), an area not bigger than New York's Central Park. The NFZ is in area still controlled by the Tamil Tigers but it is also packed full of civilians, which the government claims are being held captive. Escapees have confirmed this belief.

The United Nations estimates that between 50 and 80,000 civilians remain trapped in the conflict zone. But, more than 170,000 others have managed to escape the area, most in the last 10 days.

Recently the Sri Lankan government admitted to dropping bombs within the NFZ after UN areal photos of the area were leaked. See the video below:
